We began with an exercise involving the entire group. Called Crossroads, this exercise is outside, and it is an outstanding illustration of communication issues both between the group as a whole, and within smaller subsections of the group - i.e. 'Inter Team' and 'Intra Team'. It also illustrates very well the consequences of effective planning. In this particular event we ran the exercise through twice to demonstrate how they could make an enormous improvement with better planning and communication.
Following the first exercise the group was then divided by us into smaller teams of six or seven members. Each team had the same trainer with them at all times and they moved around six different tasks, some outside and some inside. Each task took about 40 minutes and every team then moved onto the next one in a rotation. Following each task the trainer led a short debrief and encouraged all the members of the team to join in. This would cover such things as did the team worked together? Did everyone listen to each other? Were some members of the team more dominant than others in deciding what to do and carrying it out? What had the team learnt to improve their performance on the next task?
After completing the six tasks the group came back together and had to complete another 'whole group' activity called the Team Machine.
During and after the event our trainers made notes on the group they worked with and the individuals within it. Following the event the director and head of training came to discuss these profiles and took our observations with them for further analysis. |
